The site, with a fall towards the coast, is located in an unconsolidated and complicated area of Antofagasta and is affected by the tsunami safety-zone line. Therefore, the location of the hospital must also help to resolve the infrastructure difficulties, transport and access, to encourage the maximum use of the health care facilities.
A large plaza is created at the upper part of the site providing access to the more public services of the hospital. A temporarily diverted street parallel to the sea, is restored, providing a service road to the hospitals logistic centre, a floor below the main entrance level. The lower part of the site, below the tsunami safety zone line, is intended as a garden and car park.
The hospital’s organisational structure is divided into three distinct bodies, the outpatients, the central services and hospital wards. The layout is orderly in that the public circulation routes are developed around the perimeter and the patients circulation routes are in the central areas in contact with the relevant bodies. In seeking a greater efficiency as required in a highly complex hospital, the various processes have been grouped together according to their functions.
