The new hospital San Pedro de Logroño is inspired by the pleasant impression acquired on seeing the original compound, a six storey rectangular building with spacious balconies facing south, towards a large garden with trees and the surrounding landscape.
With the aim of maintaining as many as possible of these elements, the layout of the extension was resolved by adding a nursing block parallel to the existing one on the north side, overlooking the city. The rest of the buildings which provide all the other services for the acute hospital, extend southwards in low blocks with green roofs, alternating with courtyards that can be viewed from the main building.
The bulk of the building is extended to a maximum height of two storeys, following a grid which alternates square roofs with elongated roofs over corridors, landscaped courtyards and gardens. These form a neighbourhood that shuns the traditional view of an overcrowded hospital with rooftops invaded by installations. The new panorama is based on the local natural environment and can be viewed from the terraces.
