The building is located on a large site of 200,000m2 located in “El Terminillo”, a very attractive natural setting of undulating land populated with Holm oaks, Portuguese oaks and aromatic and herbaceous plants which are typical of Cuenca.
The large area of the site available for the project enabled a horizontal layout for the hospital, which was adapted to suit the topographical profile. Organised in the shape of a comb, the different areas were arranged according to the accommodation schedule, around a central spine. This scheme was completed to the east with the great main lobby, designed with a double-height volume forming a large porch whose translucent façade stands out gleaming, from the rest of the building complex.
The project goes beyond the scope of the building itself and raises a large hospital complex in which the courtyards and gardens, the routes on foot or by vehicle and the above ground parking are interwoven with the buildings, providing practical efficiency and consideration for the well-being of the users.
Noteworthy is the incorporation of a carefully designed garden project and the interest in merging the hospital area with the natural landscape which cuts into the building, maintaining the original profile of the land throughout much of the unbuilt areas of the site. The rooms are oriented towards this landscape.
