The building is situated in the town centre and facing the river. The factors which determine the general approach to the building layout are the limited size of the site, the irregular geometry and the narrowness of the site. The main building, in the shape of a 13 storey “boomerang”, houses the hospital wards, which face the two main roads that define the hospital city block. A town plaza is created by the setback of the curved main façade facing the river. This meeting place which gives access to the building, forms part of the sequence of open spaces that occur along the promenade following the bank of the river Segura. It augments the emblematic character of the hospital, emphasized by the composition of the facades which provide a very powerful image. The rest of the services are distributed in two rectangular blocks on the inside of the “V”, at the ends of which appear two distinct entrances for the Emergency and Day hospitals. These are separated by two inner streets, one giving access to the underground car park and the other to the supplies area. The building is noted for its solar panel installation integrated on the roof and the IDAE award from the Ministry of Industry in 2001 together with the centralised management system which optimizes energy consumption.
